Approaches to Racism and the Environment:

Planet Philadelphia 4-5:00 PM Friday 6/19/20

Racism and the Environment, new Planet Philadelphia 4-5:00 PM today (6/19/20), Juneteenth. Tune in to hear about some approaches to Racism and the Environment from local community members: Dottie Baumgarten, and Rabbi Julie Greenberg.

Dottie Baumgarten, is an environmental consultant/educator and owner of Sustainable Choices since 2009. She works primarily for the Philadelphia Water Department but has some education contracts with area schools and also is a volunteer with local environmental groups. She will be talking about the problems people of color experience in environmental and scientific groups related to the environment - what are the barriers to diversity for them because of white culture and how we, as white people can work to eliminate these barriers.

Rabbi Julie Greenberg, is the Climate Justice Coordinator of POWER, an interfaith Pennsylvania organization dedicated to social justice through advocacy, organizing, education, direct action and voter engagement.  She also is a Reconstructionist rabbi. She will be talking about a recent hearing to influence the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), which regulates our energy providers, to require a larger proportion of PECO’s (our energy provider, which is owned by Exelon) distributed energy be solar.
