Tribute to John Norris, founder of Sackville Records & Coda Magazine
Tonight’s show is dedicated to CODA Magazine (1958) and Sackville Records founder John Norris who died on Monday. CODA holds a special place in the world of jazz journalism, an early proponent and chronicler of free & improvised music at a time when mainstream critics were trashing John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman, and coining terms like “anti-jazz.” Founded in 1968 primarily as a vehicle for the Canadian Jazz scene, Sackville was one of a handful of independent labels dealing in the music of artists like Anthony Braxton, George Lewis, Anthony Davis and Julius Hemphill, pictured above on the 20th Anniversary edition in 1978. I remember ordering back issues of CODA in the early 80s, and flipping through the stacks at the Record Graveyard for the albums and artists in its pages.
Jazz on Film
Lionsgate has just released the DVD of this classic 60s Jazz film starring Sammy Davis Jr. as a trumpeter at the top of his game, dealing with racism, drug addiction and the realities of the music business. Also featured are Louis Armstrong, Ossie Davis, Cicely Tyson, Mel Torme and Frank Sinatra. Many thanks to my friend Jeannette Bennett for bringing this to my attention!
