G-town Radio is proud to present news breaks from the Media Mobilizing Project. You will hear new pieces each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays (noon & 5 PM). This week's On Blast segment is called Students Stand with Taxi Workers. On Wednesday June 30th, the Philadelphia Parking Authority and Immigration and Customs Enforcement lured 26 taxi drivers to the PPA headquarters by telling them that they were to be reimbursed for previous credit card transactions. Instead, they were met with handcuffs and were immediately detained. There are still four drivers being held. This kind of harassment, especially when looked at alongside the long hours and constant mistreatment faced by taxi drivers, constitutes a form of structural violence similar to the kind faced by young people in our schools and communities.
Rising Freshman and Student Union member Shania Morris spoke at a prayer vigil held for the detained drivers.
Labor Justice Radio this week features a piece called Protecting the Right to Unionize: The Employee Free Choice Act. Every day, corporations deny workers the freedom to form unions. They routinely intimidate, harass, coerce and even fire workers who try to form unions and bargain for economic well-being. The Employee Free Choice Act (H.R. 800, S. 1041) would allow employees to form unions by signing union cards. It would also set stronger penalties for companies that violate the rights of workers who are organizing. Charles Clarke produced this piece. |

G-town Radio is proud to present news breaks from the Media Mobilizing Project. You will hear new pieces each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays (noon & 5 PM). This week's On Blast segment is called UNITE HERE Begins Battle with Aramark. Aramark provides food service for prisons, schools, and venues across the country. But do they provide health care, adequate pay, and a good environment for their workers? (PS: We know from experience, their food is crappy.) Produced by Dan Jones and Matt Johnson. Labor Justice Radio this week features a piece called Demanding Fair Treatment of Domestic Workers. Domestic Workers United (DWU) is an organization that fights for the rights of nannies, elderly caregivers, housekeepers and other workers who work inside people's homes. In this interview, Yvonne, a live-in nanny and member of DWU shares stories that illustrate the need for domestic workers to have equal labor protections and benefits-- two things that they are currently not getting under the law. G-town Radio is proud to present news breaks from the Media Mobilizing Project. You will hear new pieces each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays (noon & 5 PM). This week's On Blast segment is called Statewide Connections: Bringing Harrisburg Students into Our Campaign. Members of PSU recently traveled to Harrisburg PA to meet with students from Harrisburg's William Penn High School and engage them in our Campaign for Nonviolent Schools and our Campaign for Equitable School Funding. We led a participatory workshop that explored the root causes of violence in our schools and communities. We also talked about conditions inside our schools, and students from both Philly and Harrisburg agreed that underfunding of schools is a root cause of many of the problems we face. By sharing our experiences, students came to the realization the problems we see in our schools are not isolated to our own districts; that the struggle for a high quality education is a statewide struggle. In this piece, we hear from some Harrisburg students about how they view violence and how the Nonviolence workshop changed their perceptions of this issue. Cherelle Reed conducted the interviews, Justin Carter recorded the narration, and Greg Jordan-Detamore edited this piece. Labor Justice Radio this week features a piece called May Day 2010: Philly Labor Leaders Reflect on US Wars. Labor Justice Radio joined hundreds of local union members and labor leaders for a May Day celebration in Southwest Philadelphia this month. Several local labor leaders spoke about the impact of war on the local economy and the labor movement. A piece by Milena Velis. |

G-town Radio is proud to present news breaks from the Media Mobilizing Project. You will hear new pieces each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays (noon & 5 PM). This week's On Blast segment is called Students Stand with Temple Nurses on the Picket Line. On April 8th, The Philadelphia Student Union, along with The Unified Taxi Workers Alliance and The Media Mobilizing Project, went to the front lines of the Temple nurses strike to show support and stand with PASNAP, the Temple nurses' union. Justin Carter, a member of PSU and a senior at West Philadelphia HS, spoke to the crowd about the connections between students' struggles & nurses' struggles. He called attention to the problems with the 'gag clause' that Temple is trying to put on nurses, saying, "Just like students have the right to speak out about the conditions in our schools, nurses have the right to speak out about the working conditions in their hospitals." Recorded Greg Jordan-Detamore & produced by Justin Carter.
Labor Justice Radio this week features a piece called Aramark Accused of Wage Theft. The Philadelphia Joint Board has filed a complaint in court that accuses Aramark of not paying earned overtime to workers at Citizens Bank Park, home the Phillies baseball team, Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Eagles NFL football team, and the Wachovia Center, home of the Flyers NHL hockey team. The complaint further alleges that Aramark deducts a half hour from any worker who puts in six hours or more whether they took a break or not. The Philadelphia Joint Board says this is "wage theft" plain and simple. This report was produced by Charles B Clarke |

G-town Radio is proud to present news breaks from the Media Mobilizing Project. You will hear new pieces each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays (noon & 5 PM). This week's On Blast segment is called Powerful Union of the Poor: United Workers. He also talks about their campaigns and about gentrification in Baltimore. Produced by Eric Yates & Amber Marie Felton. Labor Justice Radio this week features a piece called Temple Risks Patients' Lives for Profit. Nurses and other healthcare professionals share stories that expose the impact on patients when Temple Hospital maximizes profits by cutting medical supplies, under-staffing and decreasing patients' length of stay at the hospital. For more information on PASNAP's strike, visit TempleWatch.org. Produced by Kistine Carolan. |
