GTOWN-ICON

Singing Contest Guarantees Winner Studio Time with Noted Producer, Cash, Gifts

The Search for the “G-Town Icon is on!”

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 29 — Forget “American Idol” —Simon’s gone anyway— popular Internet radio program, The REC Radio Show and G-Town Radio is sponsoring a singing competition of its own: “The Search for the G-Town Icon.”

Philadelphia native Donald Robinson, producer and CEO of Songs of Wisdom (S.O.W.) Productions (Robinson has produced Vanessa Williams, Grover Washington Jr., Gladys Knight, and a host of others), will serve as the lead judge of the eight-month long contest as amateur singers from across the Delaware Valley vie for the title of G-Town Icon.

Along with a prize package of cash and gifts, the grand winner will win two hours of studio time exclusively with Robinson at the beautiful S.O.W. Production House in the eclectic Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia. "I'm making that THREE hours of studio time; let's get some real work done," Robinson exclaimed when announcing the contest on The Rec, which airs Wednesdays from 8-10 p.m. on gtownradio.com.

"We usually have several small contests throughout our season," said The REC's show producer Len 'Cruze' Webb. "This year, our fifth season on G-Town Radio, we wanted to aim higher and build on the success of the show to present one big showcase event that will give our audience and the public an opportunity to show and prove" their skills.

To enter, contestants have to send a recording of their singing to The REC Radio Show where hosts Webb, Yolonda 'Lonnie' McClain, Elvin ‘The Scholar’ Jenkins and Wanda 'Freedom' Farlow will help Robinson select the top five participants. The finalists will then compete at a live showcase before Robinson and a celebrity judge panel for the title of G-Town Icon in June 2011. Contestants are also challenged to call into the show and audition live on air via phone or by racing down to the studio. According to Webb, the show wants to “bring back a sense of spontaneity to Philadelphia radio.”

The tracks should be in mp3 format and of reasonable good quality.

The Search for the G-Town Icon is open for singers of any genre but comes with two restrictions. Rappers are excluded from the contest, and according to co-host Lonnie: "If you have to auto-tune you’re 'warbling' then you're out, man!"
