MMP News Breaks This Week (07/11/10) Print E-mail

Image

G-town Radio is proud to present news breaks from the Media Mobilizing Project.  You will hear new pieces each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays (noon & 5 PM).

This week's On Blast segment is called Students Stand with Taxi Workers. On Wednesday June 30th, the Philadelphia Parking Authority and Immigration and Customs Enforcement lured 26 taxi drivers to the PPA headquarters by telling them that they were to be reimbursed for previous credit card transactions. Instead, they were met with handcuffs and were immediately detained. There are still four drivers being held.

This kind of harassment, especially when looked at alongside the long hours and constant mistreatment faced by taxi drivers, constitutes a form of structural violence similar to the kind faced by young people in our schools and communities.

Rising Freshman and Student Union member Shania Morris spoke at a prayer vigil held for the detained drivers.

Labor Justice Radio this week features a piece called Protecting the Right to Unionize: The Employee Free Choice Act. Every day, corporations deny workers the freedom to form unions. They routinely intimidate, harass, coerce and even fire workers who try to form unions and bargain for economic well-being.  The Employee Free Choice Act (H.R. 800, S. 1041) would allow employees to form unions by signing union cards. It would also set stronger penalties for companies that violate the rights of workers who are organizing.
Charles Clarke produced this piece.

Neu-Matic has a Nexus Flashback from 5 Years Past Print E-mail

Image

So, from July of 2001 until early 2006 I hosted a show called the Nexus on Radio Volta, your friendly neighborhood radical internet radio station.  The Nexus was the point through which all music must pass and the goal was to draw a line through as many different sounds as possible in a weekly 2 hour slot.

This show which aired on July 3, 2005 really captures that from the opening track about a young girl living near Osage during the MOVE disaster to Brazilian New Wave to Congolese likembes to house music, classic rock, hip-hop and lots more.

Neu-Matic happens every Sunday from 3-5 PM on G-town Radio.
