Keyboard heavy grooves goin' down at the Junction Wednesday night.  The Greg Foat Group returns with another great analogue recording and it's just as great as last year's debut!  Plus, we learned about Dave Brubeck's passing just before leaving for last week's show, so let's pay proper tribute to a true legend in jazz.  And the usual vinyl-only madness will ensue, including scores from the Philadelphia Record Riot...see you then!

Northwest Soapbox 025: 50 Years on Maplewood Mall Print E-mail

Image

Al Ciment, second generation owner of Maplewood Nutrition, is this week's guest on the soapbox. Opened in 1963 by Al's parents Maplewood Nutrition has seen dramatic changes on what was originally Maplewood Avenue. This through street was transformed into Maplewood Mall a decade later. Al spoke to us about the Mall/Avenue's golden age, tough times and what has kept the family business in the same location for almost 50 years. Click through for several more pictures comparing the mall of today to what it looked like over 50 years ago. Listen to this segment on-demand here.

The image above looks down Maplewood towards Germantown Ave. The top picture shows the avenue with metered parking. The lower image of today's mall has a radically different configuration with no room for parking and several (now mature) trees where the sidewalk once was.

The Northwest Soapbox is a platform for the people of Northwest Philadelphia to offer commentary, share news or make a call for action. Each week a different person speaks to issues affecting our community. Want to get on the soapbox? Contact us at: This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it . In addition to the podcast page you can hear new installments of the Soapbox here on G-town Radio at these times: Mondays at 10 AM and 5 PM; Wednesdays and Fridays at noon and 5 PM.

Stop by the Junction Wednesday night for some great new vinyl grooves.  Out of nowhere, the Greg Foat Group returns with an EP close on the heels of last year's now classic release and in anticipation of a full length coming out in the next two weeks.  But that's not all!  The Menahan Street Band just released their 2nd album, Finnish reedman Timo Lassy's got a new one, and we'll spin the soundtrack to Searching for Sugarman, a documentary about the enigmatic folk/funk of the elusive Rodriguez.  Plus, a batch of Hendrix covers celebrating the man's 70th birthday!
