G-town Radio is proud to present news breaks from the Media Mobilizing Project.  You will hear new pieces each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays (noon & 5 PM).

This week's On Blast segment looks at Organizing Across Race Lines. Willie Baptist, a leader in the movement to end poverty, shares some of his experiences working with the Kensington Welfare Rights Union in Philadelphia. Much of the work that the KWRU did relied on its being a cross-racial movement, and Mr. Baptist explains how deep racial divisions are overcome when the focus is put on people's common struggles.  This piece was produced by Dan Jones.

Labor Justice Radio this week features Healthcare Workers Unite for Respect in Pottstown. Healthcare workers at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center (PMMC) have been trying to bargain a new contract for months with Community Health Systems which owns their community hospital. Now, the workers at PMMC are preparing for a three day strike over unfair labor practices.  There was a community vigil in a Pottstown church recently, in support of the healthcare workers. In this piece, we hear the voices of PMMC workers and participants at the vigil. All of the workers in this piece are members of SEIU.

This story was first produced as a short video, by Miguel Andrade, Hannah Jane Sassaman & Rebeckah Scotland. Megan Williamson turned it into a radio piece for Labor Justice Radio.

G-town Radio is proud to present news breaks from the Media Mobilizing Project.  You will hear new pieces each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays (noon & 5 PM).

This week's On Blast segment is an Interview with Heidi Ramirez by Gregory Jordan-Detamore.  During BAYM (Building a Youth Movement), PSU's summer program, participants interviewed different people.  One person was Heidi Ramirez, a member of the Philadelphia School Reform Commission who recently announced her resignation. We talked about subjects such as teacher quality and the school district's strategic plan.  This is a short version that includes only some of the interview. For the rest, listen to the long version, soon to be published on this podcast.

Labor Justice Radio this week features Predatory Gambling: How Casinos Target Communities.  As the casino industry tries to push it's way into the heart of Philadelphia, communities are pushing back. In this piece, John Mason brings us highlights from a community forum hosted by Asian Americans United & Casino Free Philadelphia. The forum shed light on the predatory tactics used by the casino industry to encourage gambling addiction and target those who can least afford to lose.
